We are excited to share all about our Pirate Day in Year 1! This special day was designed to celebrate the end of our Pirate topic, where we have been focusing on the geography national curriculum objectives.
First of all, the children embarked on a treasure hunt. They followed instructions to search for hidden treasure around the school, keeping an eye out for Blackbeard the bad pirate, who might have been stealing our treasure. This activity helped the children to consolidate their understanding of directions as well as listening skills.
After break, the children then worked as a team to create their own large pirate ship, using den building equipment and junk modelling. In this activity, the children used various materials and worked together to design and construct their ships, fostering teamwork and imaginative play.
What’s a pirate’s favorite type of exercise? The plank! To add an element of physical activity, an obstacle course was set up, where the children navigated walking the plank. They had to balance, duck under and fire cannons (basketballs) into another ship. This was a great way to enhance the children’s gross motor skills.
We also linked science into our day by designing floating pirate ships. Year 1 needed to choose the best material to help their ship float.
As a final creative activity, the children wrote their very own wanted posters for the infamous pirate, Blackbeard. This helped them to practice their writing skills, whilst also sparking their imagination.
Shiver me timbers – what a fantastic day we had!
