As we begin the countdown to the 2024 BISP Soccer 7s, in this interview, we get to know BISP Year 12 student-athlete and avid photographer Chuan.
Chuan joined BISP four years ago as a scholar in the BISP Swimming Academy. He also assisted in photographing the 2023 Soccer 7s event. With a number of sports and academic commitments, he shares his experience at BISP and his future plans having just completed his IGCSE exams and beginning his IB journey.
Tell us about yourself.
Most of my passion lies within my swimming commitment and hobby for photography. If I had free time, I’d very much like to go outside or anywhere and take photos. I’ve been told multiple times that the photos I take are really good. I started getting into photography about two years ago. I’ve always had a way of holding on to memories, but I would always wish for the ability to share them with others. One day, I found my grandma’s old film camera, and after experimenting with it, I discovered my passion and talent for photography.
For swimming, I often compete at an international level. At 13, I qualified for the South East Asian Age Group (SEA Age) for the 1500-metre event, although the meet was cancelled due to COVID-19. During the holidays I work part-time as a sports photographer in Malaysia, mainly for swimming competitions, and in 2023, I helped our school as a photographer for the BISP Soccer 7s event.

In terms of role models, I look up to all the previous swimmers I’ve met at BISP, such as Arijus, Aryan, Marija, and Armaan. They and my coaches have taught me so much about discipline and personal growth. While I have many role models in my swimming career, my passion for photography comes from within myself, and I just do what feels right.
What has been the highlight of your time at BISP?
My journey at this school has been somewhat challenging due to the commitments of being a high-performance athlete and personal struggles. I arrived at BISP in 2020 and was immediately training with the high-performance team. Spending a lot of time with the seniors on the team was both inspiring and difficult as they eventually graduated and moved on, leaving me to adjust and grow on my own. Despite the challenges, I am proud of my progress, not just in my passions but also as a person.
What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
As a 16-year-old, the future seems full of endless possibilities and chances to achieve anything I ever wanted. I’m excited about what lies ahead and look forward to embracing the opportunities that come my way.
What life lessons would you want to share with others?
I’ve done many things in my life that I now consider immature, but everyone makes mistakes, and the only way to learn is to grow from them.
Chuan’s journey at BISP is a testament to his dedication and growth as both an athlete and a photographer. His story is an inspiration to many, showing that with passion and perseverance, one can achieve great things.
