The Sports and Athletic Department promotes the development of a well rounded education through structured sport and competition to i) develop skills and the character strengths of discipline, integrity, leadership, and social responsibility; ii) assure equitable opportunity for all student-athletes; and iii) make the athletic program a sustainable and notable feature of the school.
Through the Academy Programme we enable the student-athlete to realise his/her full potential and prepare for lifelong success within a safe and supportive athletic structure.
An Academy offers all layers of experience and opportunity for students according to the Sports Development Model below.
Students receive Physical Education in each year of their schooling until Year 12. They learn physical literacy skills, and gain the knowledge and understanding associated with a sequenced and developmental programme of sport and physical exercise.
Students can choose to pursue an Academy Sport through the Activity Programme at a ‘Foundation/Fundamental’ level. These activities consolidate knowledge, skills and understanding and/or facilitate recreational participation and enjoyment. In addition to the Academy sports on offer at this level, the Activity Programme also includes a diverse range of sports and athletic activities such as Badminton, Touch Rugby, Cricket, Ultimate Frisbee, Rounders, Floor Hockey and Dance.
Students can further extend their performance, experience and interest in an Academy Sport by engaging in a specialist programme of coaching at ‘Performance’ level, which on merit can lead to School representation.
Further levels of specialist provision are offered at ‘Performance’ level and for those students who reach outstanding standards of performance at ‘High Performance’ level. At this tier students are known, by definition, as ‘high performance athletes’.
British International School, Phuket features a High-Performance Academy structure to enable students to fulfil the height of their potential. Academy students receive coaching in the technical, tactical, physical and psychological aspects of their sport at the elite level.
Successes to date include the Nick Faldo series win in golf, gold medals in youth world swimming championships and professional football contracts for students with such clubs as Benfica and Bayern Munich.

Students also participate in holiday-time school camps, which often run alongside sport boot-camps for parents and staff, fostering an inclusive culture of sport across the school.
The opportunity for High-Performance coaching and attainment at the school feeds participation, acting as a source of inspiration and mentorship. High-performance athletes mentor younger students at the school in activities such as the under 7 football programme, swimming, golf and tennis.
The sporting pathways leading to our Academies create a culture of aspiration and inspiration. There is an understanding amongst our student body of what it takes to get to the level and we support that aspiration.
BISP offers a multi-purpose, outdoor space on its 44-acre campus, optimised for wellness and a healthy lifestyle. Our easily accessed facilities include 50m and 25m swimming pools full size football pitches, a trapeze and aerial arts space, and a golf course. Partnerships with local providers extend the extracurricular offering further, with nearby horse riding stables, climbing centres and world-class, 18 hole golf courses.
The school employs professional sports coaches from around the world in five Academy sports – golf, tennis, football, swimming and gymnastics.

The coaching and physical education team includes top level physios and strength and conditioning coaches, with coaches who teach at many different levels and abilities – from under 5 all the way to elite. This supportive, consistent team helps students to develop faster, learn fundamentals and skills more readily and adopt best practice.

With over 19 years in the industry, as a professional flying trapeze artist, an accomplished aerial performer and teacher, Adam has worked and performed all over the world.
In 2011, he and Ben sat down and planned out fulfilling their dream of opening their very own Aerial Arts company. Thus MACA was born in Phuket, Thailand.
Adam now spends most of his time, designing and making specialised circus equipment and flying trapeze rigs while still finding occasional time to get up and fly!
Samantha’s love for the stage began at the age of 6 and she has been performing and competing ever since. Born in Australia and raised in Singapore, Sam started out as a dancer and performed worldwide before she fell in love with artistic pole. She taught in Singapore at Bobbi’s Pole for 4 years before she moved to China, venturing into the world of circus.
Now, she is a dancer, aerialist and most importantly she enjoys choreographing and combining all the various forms of art that she has dabbled in. For the past 5 years, Sam has settled in Phuket and has been the senior aerial instructor at Mid-Air Circus Arts, managing both the aerial arts and flying trapeze academies.
Kessuree (Kess) started training in Thai Folk Dance at the tender age of three. She performed with various schools and competed in regional competitions throughout Thailand.
She began training in Pole Fitness, became a fitness instructor as well as competed in various pole competitions, such as SA National Pole Sports Competition (NPSC), Miss Pole Dance SA and Pole Theatre SA to name a few.
In 2014, Kess joined the Art of Synergy Circus School in South Africa, where she honed her skills in aerial performing and instructing and has since become a full-time professional circus performer.
Kess joined the Mid-Air Circus Arts family in 2018 and has since widened her aerial repertoire and continues to grow as a performer and instructor.
Ben’s love affair with Flying Trapeze & the Aerial Arts came when he started working as an instructor in Bali Indonesia in 2003. Since then he worked around the world with various resort rigs, before finally being promoted to managing the resorts themselves. After leaving the resort life in 2010 he worked together with Adam to fulfil their dream of having their own Trapeze & Aerial Arts Company.
In 2011 MACA was born. Ben now spends most of his time working on the development of the MACA brand and it’s partnerships around Asia, while also occasionally finding the time to get down for some teaching or catching himself.
