As part of Mental Health Day, the BISP Counselling team shared a valuable TED Talk by health psychologist Kelly McGonigal, titled “How to Make Stress Your Friend.” In this talk, McGonigal challenges the common belief that stress is harmful, explaining how, with the right mindset, stress can actually help us thrive.
McGonigal explains that stress is a natural response designed to prepare us for challenges. It helps us focus and provides the energy needed to perform at our best. Instead of seeing stress as a distraction, McGonigal encourages us to view it as a helpful boost to tackle difficult tasks.
One of the key ideas she presents is that how we think about stress matters. By shifting our mindset to see stress as something that helps us grow, it becomes a positive force. Reminding yourself, “This stress is helping me improve,” can change how you approach stressful situations.
McGonigal also offers practical tips for managing stress: deep breathing to calm the body, connecting with others for support, focusing on what you can control, and taking breaks when needed. These strategies help reduce feelings of overwhelm and build resilience.
Each time we manage stress, we develop important life skills. McGonigal’s message is clear: stress doesn’t have to be the enemy. With the right approach, it can help us grow stronger and more capable. You can explore these ideas further by watching Kelly McGonigal’s full TED Talk here.
