BISP recently hosted Professor Masato Kajimoto, PhD, from the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at The University of Hong Kong, for a special guest lecture. This event provided a unique learning opportunity for our IB English students, who are encouraged to engage critically with diverse texts and develop a nuanced understanding of the media landscape.
Professor Kajimoto, an expert in news literacy education and the misinformation ecosystem in Asia, delivered an insightful lecture on discerning factual information in today’s digital age. He shared his research on the complexities of fact-checking and media literacy, particularly in the Asian context, which offered students a deeper understanding of regional challenges and strategies related to these topics.
The interactive lecture included practical exercises in fact-checking, where students analysed online content for credibility and identified biassed or misleading information. This hands-on approach allowed students to apply their new skills, promoting critical evaluation as a cornerstone of the IB English A curriculum.
We thank Professor Kajimoto for enriching our students’ understanding of news literacy and ethical journalism. His visit has inspired our students to approach their studies with a more critical and analytical mindset, reinforcing our commitment to fostering thoughtful, informed global citizens at BISP.
