BISP recently hosted an informative and engaging event for parents of children transitioning from Nursery to Reception. This event aimed to familiarise parents with the upcoming changes and ensure a smooth transition for their children as they embark on this new phase of their educational journey.

The session began with a warm welcome from the Reception teachers: Miss Emily (Reception Purple), Miss Laura (Reception Green and Team Leader), and Miss Rashy (Reception Orange). The dedicated team also includes teaching assistants Miss O, Miss Tukta, intern Miss Georgia, and learning support specialist Miss Hayley. The introduction allowed parents to get to know the educators who will be guiding their children through Reception.

David Hyde, the Primary Principal, highlighted both the continuities and changes from Nursery to Reception. Parents were reassured that start and finish times (7:50 am and 2:15 pm), specialist lessons (Music, Swimming, PE, and Library), uniforms, and snack and lunch routines would remain consistent.

Key Changes from Nursery

Several significant changes were outlined:

  1. Full School Day: Unlike Nursery, Reception does not offer nap times. Parents were advised to gradually withdraw naps in the last weeks of holidays to help children adjust.
  2. New Communication Tool: BISP will adopt Toddle Play, an application similar to Seesaw, for sharing photos and information with parents. Regular checks of this app are encouraged.
  3. Phonics Programme: In the middle of Term 1, the Read Write Inc. Phonics program will commence. This will be supported by a parent session to help families assist their children at home.
  4. Reading Books: After the October half-term holiday, some children will begin receiving weekly reading books, initially without words. Further guidance and a Toddle video will be provided.
  5. Maths Group Time: Daily short Maths sessions will incorporate stories, music, singing, and practical resources to make learning engaging and effective.
  6. Thai Lessons: Thai passport holders will start Thai lessons in Term 1, with non-Thai children having the option to join in Term 2. An online form will be sent in Term 1 for parents to make this decision.

The settling-in procedure aims to ensure a smooth start to the school year. For the first week (19th – 23rd August), all children will attend half days, finishing at 12:30 pm. If needed, the half-day schedule can extend into the second week. By the third week, children will follow the normal timetable.

Parents play a crucial role in supporting their children through this transition. Some recommended activities include:

  • At Home: Sharing stories, singing nursery rhymes, playing listening games, and helping children practise recognizing their names and handling daily tasks independently.
  • Preparing for School: Establishing a good sleep routine, labelling belongings, and engaging positively about school with children over the summer.

Parents were reminded of important guidelines to keep the school environment safe and healthy. These include avoiding bringing toys or food from home, arriving on time, and consulting the school nurse if a child is unwell.

The Reception team emphasised their open-door policy and encouraged parents to reach out with any questions or concerns. Contact information for Miss Laura, Miss Emily, Miss Rashy, and Mr. David Hyde was provided for easy access.

The event was a valuable opportunity for parents to gain insights and feel confident about their children’s transition from Nursery to Reception. With the support of the experienced BISP team, children are set for a successful and enjoyable start to their Reception year.
