BISP has become the first school in Thailand to be awarded UK-accredited Elklan ‘Communications Friendly’ status after staff in Primary completed specialist training in speech and language development for Primary-aged children.
In June 2021, Helly Robinson and Clare Bolzen completed the UK-accredited Elklan Speech and Language Support for 5-11-year-olds with Bangkok-based training provider, Steps. During the course, the pair also trained as Lead Communication Practitioners, which has allowed them to deliver ‘Communication Counts’ training to all their BISP colleagues in Primary.
Helly Robinson, Head of Primary EAL, said the training has been hugely rewarding and she is already seeing the profound benefits to our students.
“Our Elklan training has provided us with practical, effective and differentiated strategies that enable our students to learn more effectively. It allows us as teachers to assess students in a more meaningful way to help them progress with their communication, interaction skills and academic results.”
Topics covered in the ‘Communication Counts’ training undertaken by all Primary teachers and Teaching Assistants included Developing Interaction, Asking Effective Questions, Extending Vocabulary and Encouraging Expressive Language and Narrative Development.
