Have you ever looked at a plastic bottle cap and thought, this could be something more? Neither had we until we started our CAS project, ECO-ACCESSORIES. Since September, we (Viktoriia, Valeria, Viktoriia and I, Lisa) have been transforming discarded bottle caps into keychains, earrings, and necklaces. Not only does this help reduce plastic waste, but all proceeds go to the sustainable Mai Khao Foundation, making it a project that benefits both the environment and the community.
How It All Started
Our first batch of keychains was for Halloween, but back then, we didn’t have access to proper tools, like plastic shredders and plastic melting machines. Instead, we had to improvise by cutting the plastic into small pieces and melting it using a stove. It was time-consuming, exhausting, and far from perfect. Still, we managed to create spooky-themed keychains featuring ghosts, black cats, bats, and pumpkins. Despite the struggle, they sold out almost immediately! (See the picture below.) Then, everything changed. The founder of the sustainable Mai Khao Foundation, Michelle Mouillé, stepped in and provided us with machines to melt and mould the plastic properly. Suddenly, production became faster, smoother and the designs more precise. With this new support, we were ready to take our project to the next level.
Christmas Expansion
For the Christmas Fair, we decided to take things up a notch. We didn’t just make keychains, we expanded into earrings and necklaces as well. This time, we produced over 200 accessories, featuring festive designs like snowflakes, candy canes, Christmas trees, bows, and stars. (See the picture below!)
The Future of ECO-ACCESSORIES
We’re just getting started. After seeing how successful our Halloween and Christmas collections were, we’re motivated to take this project even further. We plan to introduce new designs, expand our product range, and scale up production to reach even more people. With better techniques and more experience, we aim to make our accessories more intricate and unique. Most importantly, we want to raise even more funds and grow ECO-ACCESSORIES into something bigger than we ever imagined. Stay tuned—there’s a lot more to come.
