It has been another very successful academic year for the Mathematics Department at British International School, Phuket – BISP. We started by celebrating two students who were awarded the Exceptional Achievement Awards for getting the top scores in Thailand in their International Mathematics IGCSE. Our Year 12s and Year 13s then received 18 certificates in the Senior UK Maths Challenge, including 4 golds. In October, all of our Set 1 students took their early entry IGCSE Mathematics – with 100% getting A/A*. We wrapped up the first term with a TT-Rockstars competition for Key Stage 3 students, in which they had to compete to complete their times tables the fastest.
Term 2 also saw some impressive achievements, with a record 28 certificates in the Intermediate UK Maths Challenge, with 4 students qualifying for the elite second round competition. We had 2 successful mathematics trips abroad as well – both to Singapore and Malaysia. In Malaysia, our Year 7 and Year 8 students competed very well against some of the biggest international schools in the region. In Singapore, our Year 9 and Year 10 students earned 5 medals including 2 golds – a school record – and also achieved 2 Golden Ticket invitations to the Asian finals this summer. We rounded off Term 2 with a Pi-Day celebration for our Key Stage 3 students, where students showed off their pi memory skills and enjoyed some pi related food.
Term 3 featured the Phuket Island Mathematics Contest (PIMC), an end-of-year island mathematics competition. BISP hosted the event this year and we had a number of Year 12 students enrolled to help run the activities – we welcomed schools from across Phuket to take part in a variety of mathematical puzzles.
Thank you to all of our students and teachers, for the enthusiasm and commitment you have shown towards the Mathematics Department. We look forward to another successful year to come.
