Thomas Purcell is the newest addition to the BISP Tennis Academy as a Performance Coach. With a passion for developing athletes’ technical and tactical skills and fostering his love for tennis, Thomas brings a wealth of experience from junior levels to Division I programs. His approachable nature and enthusiasm for building connections make him a fantastic resource for students and parents alike. From refining coaching techniques to embracing the vibrant Thai culture, Thomas is eager to contribute to the thriving tennis community at BISP while enjoying Phuket’s tropical charm. We took some time to ask Thomas a few questions and get to know him a bit better:
What is your role as a Performance Coach, and how do you anticipate BISP students and parents will connect with you?
As a Performance Coach, my goal is to help each athlete grow their technical and tactical skills while promoting their independent development and love for the game of tennis. Previously, I worked with players ranging from junior levels to Division I programs, and I enjoy working with players who are dedicated to improvement.
Students and parents can connect with me on the tennis courts by joining some of our tennis classes or in a private lesson. I am an approachable person, and I look forward to building connections with students and parents. Come stop by the tennis courts and say hello!
What do you enjoy most about working in education?
What I enjoy most about working in education is connecting with people. Education and sports, especially tennis, naturally bring people together and create a social environment. It’s a sport that encourages interaction, both on and off the court. I enjoy being part of a social community where players build lasting relationships.
What attracted you to BISP?
BISP’s High-Performance Tennis Academy, exceptional campus, and tropical location attracted me to BISP. The tennis program is thriving and provides an ideal environment for players to develop their skills. The school’s professionalism and welcoming atmosphere made me feel at home from the start. As someone who loves warm weather, I appreciate Phuket’s year-round sunshine and stunning beaches to enjoy it.
What’s a professional skill, or area of interest, that you’re keen on developing at BISP?
I’m excited to continue growing in athletics, whether by refining my coaching style or challenging myself to get stronger in the gym. I’m also interested in learning more about the Thai language and culture.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
When I’m not coaching, I enjoy playing tennis for fun, snorkeling, and studying. I studied engineering in my university, so I enjoy reading about mathematics, physics, and engineering topics during my free time.
What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?
I’d say my energetic personality. I focus on channeling my energy into productive activities, especially my work or studies.
What advice would you give to your teenage self?
I’d tell my teenage self to always give my best effort and remain confident. Self-belief and maintaining a positive mindset are powerful tools for achieving your full potential.
